A wonderful day of entertainment at The Ageas Bowl has seen England beat Pakistan by 12 runs in a tense finish to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Jos Buttler's eighth ODI century came amid fireworks at the end of the first innings, with rapid half centuries from Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Eoin Morgan also helping the cause for the hosts. In response, Fakhar Zaman blazed his way to a splendid century of his own before Asif Ali got the tourists close to the target with some lusty hitting. With the required run rate rising all the time, Pakistan lost a flurry of wickets at the death and ended up falling just short with David Willey delivering an impressive spell of wide yorkers and bouncers. The next match in this series is a day/night encounter at Bristol on Tuesday.

Another one, Pakistan are falling apart now with the required run rate always on the rise. Plunkett got that delivery close to the blockhole and Faheem could only spoon it feebly to mid off. OUT! Caught. David Willey to Asif Ali. Half volley, outside off stump Deep in crease driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long off, by Stokes. Straight down the throat of Ben Stokes, one of the safest pairs of hands in the game and he duly pouches it at chest height. Willey has bowled really well in this short spell so deserves that wicket, it might be the vital one as well because Asif Ali was motoring along at a decent lick. Sarfaraz needs to take over now for the tourists.

  • 45.3
