All in readiness for the chase to commence. It was overcast at the start of the day, but the sun is shining in all its glory right now. Mohammed Al Balushi and Shuaib Al Balushi are the two Oman openers. Ayush Shukla will steam in first up. Let's go...
... The Run Chase ...
Oman's bowlers excel - Oman's bowling unit put on a disciplined display to keep the target within reach. Mohammed Al Balushi starred on the bowling front with three crucial wickets, dismantling Hong Kong's middle and lower order just as they looked to accelerate. The rest of the bowling attack contributed effectively with tight lines and economical spells, leaving Oman with a highly achievable target of 122 runs to win the match.
Regular wickets stall Hong Kong's momentum - Just as Hong Kong looked primed to shift gears, Oman fought back with timely breakthroughs. The regular fall of wickets completely halted Hong Kong's progress during the second half of the innings, preventing them from capitalizing on their strong platform. Despite a top-scoring effort from Hafeez and a decent supporting hand from Babar, the batting side struggled to find late-innings boundaries and were restricted to 121 runs after their full quota of 20 overs.
Steady start and key partnership - Hong Kong opted to bat first and managed a steady, controlled start to their innings, reaching 34 for 2 after the initial six-over Powerplay. Following the early breakthrough, Babar Hayat and Hafeez Khan stitched together a crucial 51-run partnership. This solid stand stabilized the innings and provided Hong Kong with a launchpad to target a big total in the death overs.
OUT! EHSAN KHAN IS RUN OUT! Hong Kong, China finish on 121/8. This is full and on off. Murtaza digs it out in front of long off and takes the first run hard before turning back for the second. The throw comes to the bowling end on the bounce with Ehsan Khan struggling to make his ground. Luckily for Khan, the bowler cannot gather the ball cleanly to his right, allowing him to complete the second run. As the ball deflects off the bowler's hands towards cover, Ehsan wants to sneak in the third run, but Murtaza is not aware. The keeper, Muzaffar Shiralkar, gets to the ball and lobs it towards the bowler, who does the rest with both batters at the batting end.
PUT DOWN! Faris Al Balushi is the guilty party. On middle and leg, on a length. Murtaza charges down the track and has a swipe across the line. The ball is skied a long way up behind square leg. Faris runs in off the ropes and settles himself under the skier but fails to cling on. Single taken.
Wider on off, on a good length. Khan reaches out and slams it to deep cover for a single.
On the fuller side, around off. Ehsan skips down the track but yorks himself and can only jam it out back to the bowler.
SIX! That has gone back many a mile. It is a slower one and the length is pushed up, on off. Ehsan Khan puts on the dancing shoes and wallops it way beyond the deep mid-wicket fence.
Full in length, outside off. Murtaza advances and takes the ball on the full, carving it to deep point for one.
FOUR! Through the gap! Not all that short, on off. Khan charges down the track and throws his hands at the ball. Slices it off the outer half to the left of backward point for a boundary.
Nearly sneaked through! Angled in on a good length, on middle. Murtaza takes a couple of steps down the track and has a jab at the ball. Ekes out an inside edge onto the pads. It dribbles behind the wicket and Muzaffar Shiralkar tries to catch Yasim short of his ground. He releases an underarm throw at the batting end but misses and it is away from the reach of the bowler. That allows the batters to pick up a single as the ball goes to long on. Sufyan Mehmood is not happy one bit.
Slanting in towards the off stump, on a good length. Ehsan hangs deep in the crease and dabs it wide of point for another single.
From around the wicket, off-pace ball, on a good length, on off. Yasim nurdles it square on the leg side. They think about the second but the deep square leg fielder attacks the ball and keeps the batters down to a single.
Another yorker and it tails back as well, on middle. Ehsan squeezes out an inside edge onto the pads. A single is taken as the ball rolls away on the off side.
Slips in the yorker, on middle. Ehsan Khan hurriedly jams it out.
Into the wicket, on off. Ehsan pulls it on the bounce to the man at deep square leg. Just a single.
The 100 is up for Hong Kong, China. The length is dragged back and it is the off-cutter, on off. Murtaza drops it beside the strip on the leg side and crosses over.
Full and attacking the front pad. Ehsan knocks it in front of long on and takes a single.
Fuller and in line with the off stump. Yasim wrists it to wide long on for one.
This is on a length, on off. Ehsan lunges across and pushes it wide of cover for a single.
Ehsan Khan is the next batter in.
OUT! CLEANED HIM UP! Nawed Al Balushi strikes on his return to the attack. Tailing back in, on a length. Rana clears his front leg and leaves nothing in the tank as he has a big heave across the line. The ball nips back a bit to go past the inside edge and clatters into the stumps.
Nawed Al Balushi comes back into the attack.
FOUR! Gets it through! Around off, on a good length. Murtaza opens the face of the bat and glides it past the diving backward point fielder. The short third fielder gives chase and just about pushes the ball away from the fence. However, the replays show that his trailing leg was beyond the fence when he was in contact with the ball. It has been given as a boundary.
DROPPED! That should have been taken. Full and on off. Rana backs away and collapses his back knee to smash it through covers. Shuaib Al Balushi is slow to react and does not quite get side on completely to take the catch. The ball strikes him on the palm and drops to the ground. They cross.
Very full, on middle. Yasim drives it to long on and rotates the strike.
The umpire has been hit on his right knee and the umpire is being treated by the physio.
Oh, the umpire Faisal Afridi has copped a blow on the shin. Sufyan Mehmood bowls it on a length, on off. Murtaza springs onto the front foot and drives it with the full face of the bat. It goes uppishly towards the bowler. Sufyan Mehmood tries to take the catch to his left, but the ball clips his fingertips and goes past the sticks before pinging the umpire just below the right knee. Nasrulla Rana was backing up, so he could have been in trouble had the ball hit the stumps off the bowler's hand.
Coming up next - In the second game of the day, Afghanistan will take on Nepal in a Group A clash, with the first ball at 5 am GMT. A win for Afghanistan will confirm their progression to the next round, while this will be Nepal's first game of the competition, and they will be keen to start well. Do join us early for the build-up to that game. Cheers!
Chase never took off - Making their debut at the Asian Games, Oman were up for the challenge in the field, showing plenty of intent, although they were sometimes a little too eager with the overthrows. They would have had mixed feelings about their bowling effort, knowing that 122 was never going to be an easy target to chase, and so it proved. Oman were blown away inside the Powerplay, with Ayush Shukla wreaking havoc. You do not win many games when you lose 4 wickets in the Powerplay, and the surface only added to Oman's challenge. Sufyan Mehmood was left fighting a lone battle, but the Oman captain could perhaps have taken a few more chances to reduce the margin of defeat.
Bowlers inspire the win - After opting to bat first, Hong Kong, China found themselves in a bit of early trouble. Babar Hayat and Hafeez Khan got a partnership going, but the batting side could not quite build on the platform they had laid. Thanks to Yasim Murtaza and Ehsan Khan, Hong Kong, China reached 121. With the tournament lives on the line, Ayush Shukla produced exactly the kind of performance Hong Kong, China needed. He put on a clinic with the new ball, ripping through Oman and setting the tone for what followed. The spinners then took over and kept the pressure on, putting the chase beyond Oman's reach.
Hong Kong, China stay alive - A defeat would have sent them out, but not only have Hong Kong, China kept themselves in the quarter-final race, they have also improved their net run rate after suffering a heavy defeat in their opening game. This result means that if Oman lose to Malaysia, both Malaysia and Hong Kong, China will progress to the quarter-finals. If Oman win, all three teams will have one win each, and qualification will then come down to net run rate.
Nasrulla Rana bowls a short one, slower and around off, Abdul Jalil swings and misses on any sort of connection with the ball. Hong Kong, China win this one-sided affair by 41 runs.
NO BALL! Nasrulla Rana has overstepped. Good length, on off, Abdul Jalil cuts this to point.
No run, that is punched off the back foot, but not in the gap.
