We are back for the chase. Chris Jordan and his men are in a huddle before they take their respective positions on the field. They are followed by the two MI London openers, James Vince and Will Jacks. Jofra Archer is ready at the top of his mark to steam in. Here we go...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Can Brave defend 129? The hard new ball came on nicely, but batting seemed to become difficult as it softened. Just as we saw in the women's game earlier, the square boundaries proved difficult to clear, and the men found it no different. Southern Brave will look to make use of those dimensions. Early wickets will be key if they are to put MI London under pressure and stay firmly in the contest. Stick around as the chase is coming up shortly.
Let's hear from Trent Boult - Boult says that the wicket looked good and the ball came onto the bat nicely, but it was a good bowling effort to keep the opposition under 130 runs. On the wicket of Ben McKinney, Boult says that he didn't know Ben played the scoop and goes on to say that he felt good about his bowling today. Ends by saying that the slower ball did grip a bit, and they have an experienced bowling attack as well, which helped.
Brave finish below par - Having been asked to bat first, Southern Brave lost a couple of early wickets, but Jamie Smith blazed his way through the Powerplay. However, he couldn't carry that momentum into the middle phase. Brave did manage to get a couple of productive sets, but the wickets of Smith and Tristan Stubbs at crucial junctures stalled their progress. Those who followed were unable to inject the desired impetus, and the back end of the innings fizzled out for the home side as they could only manage 34 runs in the last 25 balls, losing 5 wickets along the way.
A job well done by MI London - A thoroughly professional performance from Sam Curran and his men, who will walk off well pleased with the all-round effort they produced. Southern Brave have fallen short of the total they would have had in mind, and the innings never really took off for the home side.
OUT! LUKE WOOD IS RUN OUT! Excellent finish from Tom Curran and Southern Brave finish with 129/9 on the board. Curran bangs it in well short and angles it across off. Luke Wood reaches up to cut it away but is beaten and Jofra Archer tries to pinch a bye. Wood is caught ball-watching and responds really late. The keeper lobs the ball back to the bowler and Curran dislodges the bails at his end. Archer and Wood did cross each other, so it is Wood who is given out.
Another batter gets caught in the deep. Luke Wood to face the last ball.
OUT! CAUGHT! The square boundaries are huge at this venue and you simply can't flick the ball over the ropes here. Full and fast from Tom Curran, in the slot around leg. Saif Zaib picks it up well and whips it down to deep mid-wicket. Nathan Sowter takes another good low catch in the deep and the Brave lose their 8th wicket.
A quicker short ball now, at the batter. Jofra Archer hangs back and swats the pull down to deep mid-wicket for a single.
Jofra Archer comes out to bat.
OUT! TAKEN! James Vince takes a near-identical catch to the last one and Tom Curran has a wicket to his name. Curran just takes off a few miles off the delivery, digging it in short over the stumps. Chris Jordan is forced to take on the pull but gets a top edge over mid-wicket. Vince comes in from the deep and reverse-cups it with ease.
FOUR! A cheer from the crowd as the skipper starts the final set with a boundary. Too full and straight, clipped away off the pads and through square leg for a boundary.
Tom Curran to close out the innings.
Full toss on off, Saif Zaib hangs very deep in the crease and ends up hitting it off the higher part of the blade through mid off for one more.
Very full again, outside off, this is hit away along the turf and through extra cover for just a single.
The skipper of Southern Brave, Chris Jordan is in next.
OUT! CAUGHT! Trent Boult answers right back and as soon as Chaudhary hit it, he knew he was a goner. The slower bumper into the wicket, angled across the batter a bit. Nikhil Chaudhary is taken aback and looks to pull but one hand comes off the handle of the blade. The ball gets lofted towards deep mid-wicket, where James Vince takes a simple catch standing well inside the ropes.
FOUR! Chaudhary really dug that one out of the turf. Another yorker, wide outside off. Chaudhary stays back and gets it to the right of mid off for a drilled boundary.
A leg stump yorker from Boult, and he gets it spot-on. Saif Zaib misses the flick and the ball thuds off the pads to the leg side. Just a leg bye.
Trent Boult returns.
A bit shorter, angled at the batter. Zaib hangs back and miscues the pull in front of mid-wicket for a single. Sam Curran ends with 22/2 in his 20 balls.
Good running between the wickets again from this pair. Hard length at the stumps, hit away through wide mid on for a couple of runs.
The moon ball again, full and at 46 mph outside off. The ball dips on the batter and drags it through square leg for a single.
Juicy full toss, wide outside off. Saif Zaib reaches out and just slashes it away to deep backward point for one. Zaib should have done more with that.
The call is for two again, but this time Chaudhary won't get it. Full and angled into the stumps, Chaudhary comes down the track and jams it into the turf and back down the ground for one.
Sam Curran to bowl out now.
Another slower ball, pitched fuller on off. Chaudhary leans on and drills it down to the right of long off for two quick runs. Nelson is up for the Brave as well.
FOUR! Chaudhary calls for two, but he's picked the gap to perfection. Full toss on the pads, it is bowled slower and dips as well. Chaudhary lunges to reach it and manages to hit it well to the right of deep mid-wicket for a boundary.
A proper bumper now, over leg stump. Saif Zaib pulls it away through backward square leg for one.
Things are heating up - The 2026 season of The Hundred is well and truly up and running now, and we are starting to see some really close games. There is also a combined trophy this season, and a big fat cheque to go along with it, and that will be presented to the franchise with the most points in the league stage by combining the points of the Men's and Women's teams. Manchester Super Giants currently lead that table, and we will be keeping an eye on it throughout the season. For now, MI London move up the table on the Men's side as Southern Brave slump further and will need to start winning games ASAP. Next up in The Hundred, Sunrisers Leeds welcome Manchester Super Giants to Headingley on Tuesday, 28 July. Let's now hear from the winning captain - MI London skipper Sam Curran says it was a terrific game of cricket and credits Southern Brave for dragging it back brilliantly. He adds that this is the beauty of The Hundred, where the bowling side always feels it has a chance to stay in the contest. Curran says innings like Sherfane Rutherford's often go unnoticed despite being hugely important in the context of the match. He admits they were unsure how the wicket would play, but they were happy to have kept Southern Brave under 130.
The Brave fought bravely - Southern Brave had 70-odd runs on the board midway through their batting innings but only managed to reach 129 in the end, and it was always going to be a tough total to defend. Marcus Stoinis gave his side a couple of early breakthroughs, but the Brave failed to back it up, allowing a stand between Will Jacks and Sam Curran to flourish. The late comeback was on as the two leg-spinners, Adil Rashid and Nikhil Chaudhary, picked up crucial wickets to go along with a couple of run outs as well, but it wasn't enough.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Will Jacks is given the award for his crucial knock of 54 off 41 balls in the chase. Jacks says it was a very tight finish and admits the side were relieved to get over the line on what he describes as a tricky surface. He adds that they always felt they were in the game while chasing 130. On his role, Jacks says they had spoken about how the new ball can often be the toughest time to bat, so his job was to assess the conditions and take the innings deep after the early wickets. He says opening the batting is his natural position, but is happy to do whatever the team needs, adding that he has grown to love the role he plays for England. Looking ahead, Jacks believes this could be a watershed moment for the side, saying wins like these can propel a group forward.
MI edge a low-scoring thriller - We have now seen three back-to-back games go down to the very final ball in The Hundred, counting both the Men's and Women's competitions. This should have been a straightforward run chase, but the surface was a bit tricky, and the larger square boundaries always kept the bowling team in the game. A fine knock from Will Jacks up top, to go along with a late cameo from Sherfane Rutherford and eventually a calm head from Ollie Pope, saw the visitors home in an epic finish.
Down to the wire - Another absolute gut-wrenching game in The Hundred, and after the Women from Southern Brave managed to win the game by 1 run earlier on, the Men from MI London have managed to just cross the line with the bat on the final ball. MI get back to winning ways, whereas it is a third straight defeat for the Brave, and this one will hurt a lot.
Pope gets the job done for MI London. Nikhil Chaudhary kicks the turf in frustration, but he gave it his all and nearly pulled it off for his side. It was not to be on the night for him, and Southern Brave lose another close game. MI London win by 3 wickets on the final ball, picking up their second win in 3 games. Chaudhary drops it short, on middle. Pope presses back and swings at it. Slices it off the outer half and gets enough bat on it to clear the man at point. Saif Zaib goes after it and slides to prevent the boundary, but the batters run three even though two was all they needed.
More delay as Chris Jordan takes his time setting the field. A bit of gamesmanship coming in from Southern Brave as they hope that the nerves seep into Ollie Pope.
A bit of air given, on off and middle. Boult has a hack across the line and gets it away to mid-wicket, where the man is in tight. He gets low to his left but cannot make a clean stop. It is parried towards long on, and Boult brings Pope back on strike. 2 needed off the final ball.
Nikhil Chaudhary has hurt his non-bowling hand, and there's a bit of blood oozing out as well. The physio is out to tape it up. Chaudhary is wincing in pain a bit, and it is a prolonged delay, only adding to the drama of this contest. Not quite sure what's going on in Boult's mind either. Does he go for it, or does he look for the single and hope Ollie Pope wins it on the final ball? Finally, after a long delay, Chaudhary is set to bowl again.
PUT DOWN! Nikhil Chaudhary had it in his grasp for a moment but couldn't hang on for long enough. Floated up, on off. Boult winds up and smacks it hard, low towards the bowler. Nikhil Chaudhary gets low on his follow-through and gets both hands to it. The ball hits him hard on the palm, and it sticks in his left hand before popping out and dropping to the ground. A dot nonetheless. It comes down to 3 runs needed off 2 balls.
Trent Boult comes in with 3 needed off 3 balls. Earlier in the mid-game interview, he joked about not wanting to bat, but here he is, having to play a crucial role late in the game with the bat.
OUT! RASHID KHAN IS RUN OUT! A risk taken but it does not come off for Rashid Khan. Nikhil Chaudhary spears in a full ball, on middle. Rashid sinks to a knee and gets it away towards deep square leg. The batters commit to the second run but Archer swiftly moves to his left in the deep and hurls the throw on the bounce to the keeper. Jamie Smith collects it on the bounce and breaks the stumps with Rashid well short of the crease. 3 needed off 3 and Ollie Pope is away from the strike.
In the air...but safe. Attacking the front pad, on a length. Rashid attempts the reverse and spoons it over point. The sub fielder, Tom Abell goes after it but the ball stays out of his reach. Two taken. MI London need 4 off 4.
Will Nikhil Chaudhary continue? Yes, he will bowl the final set as well.
Angled into the right-hander, a yorker. Pope squeezes it out to extra cover and hurries to the other end. Rashid Khan slides his bat inside the crease in time before the throw reaches the keeper.
Not much going Brave's way in that appeal. Flatter and shorter, around leg. Rashid hops back to open up the off side but the ball keeps coming in with the arm. Rashid jams it out towards cover, and they cross. Southern Brave take a chance with the review but the Ball Tracking has the impact outside the line of the leg stump. The on-field decision is upheld.
Review time. This one seems more in hope than anything else. Half a shout for LBW, but it is turned down. The third umpire has a look. No bat involved and the impact is outside the line of leg stump. Not Out.
Rashid Khan is the new batter in. Can he deal the telling blow?
OUT! CLEANED HIM UP! Brave need a wicket, quipped Simon Duoll on air just before this ball and right on cue, Nikhil Chaudhary has delivered. Looped up by Nikhil, on middle. Curran backs away to open up the off side and misses it completely. The ball makes a mess of the stumps behind, and Chaudhary also gives a bit of a send-off to Curran.
Fired in, very full, Ollie Pope takes the risk of playing the reverse and gets it fine of the man at short third for a single.
Ollie Pope is safe. Full and pushed through at the sticks. Curran gets inside the line of the ball and hangs low to play the lap down to the vacant deep fine leg fence. Jofra Archer covers a lot of ground to his right from deep backward square leg and tidies up. The batters take the third run on the throw. Jamie Smith gathers it above the stumps and breaks the sticks in a flash. The third umpire is summoned for a check but Pope is safely in due to the dive.
Is that gone? Too close too call and the third umpire is called in. The replays are checked and it is confirmed that Ollie Pope has saved himself with the big dive. Not Out!
Right then, 12 needed off 10. The Brave only have Luke Wood and Nikhil Chaudhary as the remaining bowling options. Jordan has taken the risk, and the leg-spinner Chaudhary has been tossed the ball to bowl the all-important penultimate set.
Not all that short, just outside the off stump. Pope plays the short-arm jab wide of deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs. Archer feels that it should have been only a single.
A sharp and quick bumper by Archer, on middle. Curran fends it down awkwardly on the leg side and picks up a single.
Ollie Pope finally walks out to bat, but he won't be on strike to begin with. Also, Southern Brave are penalized for a slow over rate and will have to bring an extra fielder inside the ring.
OUT! SHERFANE RUTHERFORD IS RUN OUT! Rutherford throws his head back in disappointment. This wicket keeps the hopes alive for Southern Brave. Archer darts in a yorker, on middle and leg. Rutherford jams it out wide of mid-wicket and sets off for the single. It bounces nicely for Chris Jordan, who moves to his right and gets to the ball. He collects it cleanly and fires in a throw at the bowling end. He hits the stumps and Sherfane is found short despite his attempt to slide the bat in.
A little too straight by Archer. Fuller and on the pads. Sherfane fails to help it away. The ball thuds into the pads and dribbles towards backward square leg. The batters pick up a couple of leg byes by the time the deep fielder can get rid of the ball.
FOUR! Just a chip but it has still flown towards the fence. Angled away, on a length, Rutherford pushes out in front of his body and just checks his lofted stroke. Gets it over cover and well to the left of the man at deep point for a boundary.
