- The only previous meeting between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval ended in an eight-wicket victory to the Black Caps in the Boxing Day Test of 2014 in what was the first ever Test at the venue.

- New Zealand had won three Test series on the bounce heading into this series with Sri Lanka, and a victory in this Test would secure for them a fourth consecutive Test series win for the first time in their history.
- New Zealand’s Tim Southee (232) needs just two more wickets to eclipse Chris Martin (233) as the third most prolific wicket taker in Black Caps’ history; only Sir Richard Hadlee (431) and Daniel Vettori (361) have taken more.
- Dilruwan Perera’s next wicket will be his 150th in Test cricket for Sri Lanka, becoming just the fourth player to take as many wickets for his side; he’s taken 48 wickets thus far in 2018, his best ever tally in a single calendar year.
- Tom Latham (New Zealand) is the only player to have batted the maximum possible 10 innings from the previous five Tests at Hagley Oval; as a result, his tally of 289 runs at the venue are the second most of any player (Brendon McCullum - 365).
- Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka) is just 59 runs shy of becoming the second player to score 1000 Test runs in 2018 (Virat Kohli - 1,240); only against Bangladesh (75) does he have a better Test batting average than he does against New Zealand (54.8).
